Handy.com housecleaners’ lawsuit could rock on-demand companies

Another reason to use a house cleaning company that pays their employees well and pays for all of their drive time, gas, cars, etc.

Is your house cleaner getting paid to travel to your home?

Read an interesting article last month in the Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/storyline/wp/2014/09/10/at-the-uber-for-home-cleaning-workers-pay-a-price-for-convenience/

Some questions that come to mind:

1.  Who is really cleaning your house?

2.  Are they receiving a fair wage - we pay our team leaders and team members all of the drive time they are in our company vehicles!

3.  Are they using professional products?  Can a suitcase hold all of the professional products, including professional vacuum cleaners to clean your home thoroughly?

4.  Who is really cleaning your house?  Okay, I already asked that question, but it is an important consideration.  These people are around your valuables.  Call our office, speak with a human, ask us questions.  Our employees go through background checks, drug tests, etc.

5.  Have they been properly trained?  These businesses shouldn't have to train independent contractors, according to the IRS and many state labor boards. Independent contractors should be able to begin immediately, producing work that they've been hired for. If a worker requires significant training, he or she may be considered employees.

Some food for thought.

At the end of the day, I ask you if those "contractors" share our corporate values:

Positive, Honest, Efficient, Consistent and Reliable

Warm Regards,

So ... we're already into Spring.  What should you do to clean your home for a "spring cleaning?"  Or what should you have on your DO and DON'T DO list?  Check out this great article from Woman's Day at:

http://www.womansday.com/home/5-spring-cleaning-dos-donts-65229

---

5 Spring Cleaning Dos and Don’ts

These short and simple tips will have your home sparkling in no time.

These five tricks will make your spring cleaning process more efficient and your home cleaner—you can thank us later!

1. “When cleaning, start from the highest point in a room and move down, so any dust stirred up can be vacuumed at the end,” says Denise Baron, owner of CarleysCleaning.com. Vertical surfaces like walls can collect dust, too, especially if they’re textured. Every month or so, rubber band a microfiber cloth to the end of your mop or broom and sweep walls top to bottom before vacuuming.

2. Bathrooms and kitchens are where moisture meets dust, making cleanup that much harder. Vacuum first, Baron says: “It helps reduce the amount of dirt and dust your mop needs to collect.”

3. Don’t skimp on carpet cleaning. “About half the soil remains, even with the best vacuums,” Rathey says. Do hot-water extraction regularly.

4. Keep sticky, greasy kitchen residue at bay with regular surface wipe-downs and dust won’t adhere as easily, Handrick says.

5. Use clean tools so you don’t just move dust around. When your mop head or cloth gets soiled, it’s time to rinse it, clean it or change it, even if it’s after each swipe. “When it’s soiled, it doesn’t do you any good to keep using it,” says Handrick. Paper towels may seem easier, but they just release more dust into the air. To get more mileage out of a single cloth, Rathey recommends folding it in half, then in half again—that’s eight.

Of course my best recommendation would be to visit http://www.marvelmaids.com/quote.html and we'll come take care of your Spring Cleaning for you.  We do offer those one time cleans ... for example, if your mother in law is coming to town!  We've had a lot of those calls this week with Easter approaching.

Fascinating blog post about the "Uberification of the US Service Economy."

http://schlaf.me/post/81679927670

So, then what?

What I've heard customers tell us ...

"I like dealing with a house cleaning company that I can trust."

"I like having the same people come out to clean my house, as I have built up a relationship with them and they know my house."

"I like the consistency of dealing with one company that has a standardized process but also is flexible enough to know my personal needs."

The list goes on ...

Some thoughts about cleaning and maintaining marble floors.  Did you know that Marvel Maids (www.marvelmaids.com/quote.html) encounters marble, limestone, bamboo, slate, hardwood and all types of flooring on a daily basis?

1.  Always use a mat to minimize the transfer of dirt and debris to your marble floors.
2. Avoid using marble flooring in areas where you will be preparing or consuming food.  I.e.  It's not a good idea to have marble floors in a kitchen.  If its too late, consider using rugs or matting under areas where food is eaten or prepared.
3.  Pets can cause marble floors to get scratched, so keep them in another area of the home.
4.  Consider taking your shoes off when walking on marble floors to minimize the transfer of dirt into the porous surface.
5. Use a gentle neutral or near neutral pH cleanser to clean the floors to avoid pitting the floors and dulling the marble.
6.  When the floors are free of dirt and debris, have them professionally waxed to protect the marble from absorbing dirt and debris.

Of course, this is not all consuming and just some general thoughts about marble flooring.  We always recommend using experts to take care of your flooring.  We're experts at general cleaning not flooring.

Have a great week!

I was reading a study that was put out by the National Health Information Survey.  Did you know that the flu costs U.S. employers 75 million days of work absence annually?  According to Trend Hunter, there are 25,000 germs per quare inch that live on office phones.  According to Reckitt Benckiser, 80% of employees have gone to work with the flu and the flu and strep germs can survive on a surface for two days.

To your health!

Interesting read about money and happiness.  "For several centuries, classic economic theory has held that more money is better: the higher people’s salaries, the happier they will be. But economists have started to realize that this isn’t true. For example, they’ve discovered that people who earn $55,000 are not twice as happy as people who earn $25,000. They are only 9 percent happier. And once people reach $75,000 in income, more money has no impact at all.  This was the starting point for Dunn and Norton, who asked: If more money doesn’t matter, what does?"

We were speaking with a customer in San Francisco the other day about the house cleaning services that offer house cleaners for $15/hr.  He said he was going to give them a shot, as we were completely booked out for the day.  He called  us back a few days later and said he tried that route but prefers to stay with us.  Without asking, he told us that he wants to know who is coming out to his house and that he gets the same people every time.  He expressed his concern of this not happening by using one of these services.  He also liked the fact that the people we sent to his house were in fact employees, who we cover under all of our taxes and insurances.  There you go ... another customer confirming that Marvel Maids, Inc. provides San Francisco with Trusted Green Cleaning Since 1979.

Fascinating article out today in Bloomberg Technology.  The article talks about San Francisco's Income Gap.  Its says that the epicenter of the income inequality debate has shifted from Wall Street to Market Street ... the jobless rate fell to a record low of 4.6% last month ... only 14% of homes up for sale in SF were affordable for the middle class.  Read more:
